Christmas as they say is the time to be merry. And, indeed, we tend to be more cheerful and good natured as this special holiday approaches. As a consequence,we start writing cards to all of our friends and acquaintances to share all these firtree-inspired feelings. But what about our international friends? Shouldn't write something in their mother tongue to make things more personal?

To help you fight this christmassy linguistic drama, we’ve done a bit of research and come up with the most frequent international Christmas greetings. So, get a hold of that pen and start writing away! This is a great aid when you want to write cards to friends and family living abroad!

It is a celebration that changes for the better our take on life, makes us see the good in others and open our hearts to them. All around the globe Christmas combines universal elements, like decorating the tree, with other, less known, region-specific ones.

The Pig Sacrifice

A few days before the beginning of the holidays the pig sacrifice takes place. This is done on December 20th, the day of St. Ignatius. This tradition is kept particularly in the countryside, where everything takes place according to a closely followed ritual. The origins of this custom date back to immemorial times. It was accepted and absorbed by the Christian religion as a natural part of the local community life. Christianity also bestowed upon it a religious significance, as nobody can taste the food prepared on this day until after the priest has given his blessing.

The Goat Dance

The elder held the goat as the animal that could foretell if the weather would be good or bad. Originally, the ˝goat dance˝ (the killing, mourning, burial and resurrection ) was a grave and serious ceremony. In time it has turned into a ritual meant to bring prosperity in the year to come. Nowadays, this game has remained a pretext to remember traditions from long ago and also take pride in the colorful traditional costumes worn on this occasion.

Carol Singing

Carol singing usually marks the start of the 12 days of Christmas. In the villages, children and lads usually go from house to house singing carols. They are organized in a ˝bevy˝ with a clearly defined hierarchy, having a leader and a meeting place.

In the past, the lads between 18 and 20 would be the ones going out carol singing. They would find a host in one of the villages and they would always go out on together. If one of them was found alone on the streets of the village, he would be in for quite a severe punishment.
During this time everything has to have a festive dimension. Carols create an atmosphere full of optimism, where men make wishes and foster secret desires.

The Christmas Tree

The custom of the Christmas tree was borrowed from Western Europe. Supposedly, it comes from the pagan Germanic tribes and was subsequently absorbed by christianity. In Romania, the tradition of decorating a tree or a green branch was tied to the wedding ritual (the wedding firtree) or to the burial ritual of an unwed youth. As a Christmas tradition, it was encountered until the end of the XIXth century only in the houses of the German immigrants. After WWI, this custom spread in the entire country.

Apparently a contradiction in terms, this oxymoron couldn’t be more true! For what else better describes the evolution of spoken language? But where does pirated software exactly come in, in this mystic ecuation of the combination of morphemes? Don’t go yet in stand-by mode and let’s see if you can figure it out together!

Past and present – two sides of the same story

The times when all you could hear was ‚asl pls’ are long gone by now. Proud parents of hyper-active internauts no longer fumble in a cloud-thick fog of obscure-sounding internet terms. They have special dictionaries for that now! Information Technology is becoming more and more and integral part of our daily lives. This begs the question: does pirated software fit in this categoy? And to what extent does its influence affect the way we speak?

Undisputed ˝stars˝

Probably one of the ¨stars¨ of the Romanian slang is the equivalent expression of ˝you crack me up ˝. Well, this precise phrase got me thinking the other day. Could be that it orginates form binary realms? One explanation the ¨linguistic department¨ of my subconscious promptly provided is that this particular phrase comes from the pretty demanding task of ¨cracking a code˝. Hmmm...
Truth be told, in order to take full advantage of the latest upgrades, for a software you intalled anyway from the cd of a generous neighbour, you would need to crack a code. Might this be such a widespread practice that the fast-flowing current of the spoken language immediately absorbed it? There’s no doubt about it, the computer is the first one to feel the pulse of what’s going on on the streets. I wonder how it deals with traffic jams...

Linguistic El Dorado

Obviously, a definite answer remains a distant and unattainable chimera. Sadly, the Romanian competent authorities in this field fail to provide us with a definite answer. Till then keep you eyes open and your ears to the ground of linguistic evolution.

‚Vedete’ indiscutabile

Half a century ago the average age a girl got married at was around 14-15. That meant that by the time she was 17 she was already a devoted wife, a caring mother and was attending to the good keeping of the household. Now that’s a frightening thought!

Times have changed and so has the age girls usually tie the knot at. A couple of years ago it was still quite a young age, compared to the European average, but nowadays girls seem to be taking their time more and more when it comes to the ‚forever and ever’ part of their dreams.

In Romania, girls usually get married sometime between the age of 22 and 25, whereas boys prefer to wait until they’re at least 26. Usually, there’s a difference of at least two years between the two, frequently more, the husband being older than the wife.

One of the essential changes that has come about in marriage patterns in Romanian society is that couples delay the decision to get married until they are firmly convinced of the stability and solidity of the couple. If you ask me, I hail it as a sign of matureness and responsible thinking.

Another factor worth taking into consideration is that more and more women decide to get a University degree and put significant emphasis on their professional development. Consequently, this tendency leads to a constant procrastination of the ‚d-day’, as other, momentarily more important, priorities have to be attended to.

However, the old-fashioned way of thinking is still deeply rooted in Romanian society and the transition to the modern lifestyle and its subsequent conventions are still mokingly looked down upon.
What will the future bring? I think that only wedding bells can answer that question. Any translators around?

Once upon a time there was a beautiful country that offered everything from breathtaking mountain ranges to endless plains and green hills as far as the eye could see. But one day the big bad wolf decided to make roads, to travel the country better, and to put up sign posts to control traffic better.

As they say, the rest is history. Here we are, in 2008, highly engaged in traffic. Luckily, the Romanian authorities have diligently seen to that and have left us wanting for nothing. Traffic signs range from the utterly correct and serious to the ones meant to ‚test your limits’, just to show that as a driver you shouldn’t be ‚prejudiced’. Below you will find just a few of the ‚highly creative and inspirational’ traffic signs the Romanian authorities have come up with.. An image is worth a thousand words, isn’t it?

As you can see from the image above, logic is no absolute prerequisite in traffic.

Furthermore, who said that when faced with dangerous curves ahead you should slow down? Quite the contrary!

As you can see, there aren’t many parking options left. Well, I guess the good places are always taken, aren’t they?

Who said the mortal nature of man could not meet the divine? Apparently it’s possible. On a signpost at least...

The picture says it all. As a true member of a consumer society, the driver has to be presented with lots of options to choose from. A democratic country through and through.

If you ever feel the need of a bit of mental activity and want to exert yourself at some vocabulary games, the Forest Authorities have already seen to that. Can you spot the error?

Newton? The laws of gravitation? Hmmm, probably just concepts from a too distant past to be remembered. Or applied. Just follow the traffic sign!

As you can see it is not always easy to be a good driver and abide by the law when it comes to traffic signs. At least, not when they go against pure and simple common sense. Remember: drive safely!

If you come from Romania, the answer is more than obvious: a sports page. Sports pages are the ones that get the most traffic, followed by news, job and entertainment oriented websites. So what’s THE website you should be clicking on?

If you come from Romania, the answer is more than obvious: a sports page. Sports pages are the ones that get the most traffic, followed by news, job and entertainment oriented websites. So what’s THE website you should be clicking on?

Preferably, the one of ‚Gazeta Sporturilor’, the sports newspaper with the highest rankings. In fact, its website is the most visited one of all. Browsing further through the top 10 websites, we stumble upon a couple more focused on sports. Namely: Prosport.ro and Sport.ro.

And, of course, sports goes hand in hand with entertainment. At number 2 on our list of the most trafficked websites, we find trilulilu.ro, a Romanian version of youtube. Here the users can upload their movies and interact with others, in this web-based community.

Nevertheless, it’s not all fun and games that Romanians click on. A considerable interest is also given to news and newspapers’ sites. As a result, the online pages of the most important daily papers are amongst the ones that receive the most traffic.

The page-clicking interest of Romanians is also sparked by job-oriented websites. The one which receives the most user-attention and is consequently most visited is eJobs.ro. Among the benefits it offers are a considerable job database and innumerable tips and tricks to help the users find the job best suited to their abilities.

If the old adage said ‚tell me who your friends are, so I can tell you who you are’, the modern-day version would probably go like this: ‚tell me what websites you surf on, so I can tell you who you are’. Internet has by far and away gained a significant place in our lives and it looks like it’s not planning to give it up any time soon.
