There are numerous good movies out there. However, language seems to get in the way when it comes to translating them. Naturally, it is not always possible to perfectly translate a quote, or even a movie title, but below are the worst English to German movie translations. Each example shows the film’s original English title and the direct translation of the German names:

Obviously, there was some lack of communication here, so much so that it is possible for a movie name to mean an entirely different thing in the translated title. Let’s hope for better times in the movie translation business!

The mistakes Germans typically make when speaking English are quite conspicuous, yet not fatal. The base of these common mistakes essentially lies within the German accent, picked up on by many comedians. Usually the mistakes are divided into grammatical mistakes and pronunciation mistakes.
The most difficult word for Germans in the English language is probably ‘the’ and the ‘th’ sound in general. Tired tongues and beginners simply replace the ‘th’ with ‘s’.

Grammarwise there are also some drastic mistakes due to credulously translated words. The concept of ‘for’ and ‘since’ and its use is difficult to handle for Germans. This is because German only has one word to express periods and points of time.

Furthermore, Germans seem to have trouble with the concept of conditional phrases, as they mix up ‘if’ and ‘when’ due to the same reason as ‘for’ and ‘since’. In German, the direct translation means the same word.
Also, some Germans struggle with the non-existence of plurals for some words, such as ‘information’. The word ‘news’ comes under the same category, as it does not have a singular form.

Syntax and structure are essentially the same in English and German, hence few mistakes are made here. However, the mistakes Germans make are not severe, yet can be quite obvious.

Die Fehler, die Deutsche machen, wenn sie Englisch sprechen sind nicht schlimm, aber auffällig. Der deutsche Akzent ist weltbekannt, leider im negativen Sinne. Die gängigen Fehler werden in der Grammatik und in der Aussprache gemacht.

Das größte Problem liegt in der Aussprache des ‚th‘, zu finden in ‚the‘, ‚three‘ oder ‚to think‘. Anfänger und müde Zungen machen aus dem ‚th‘ schnell ein ‚s‘.

In der Grammatik scheinen Deutsche mit dem Konzept der konditionalen Sätze Probleme zu haben. ‚for‘ und ‚since‘ werden gerne von Deutschen verwechselt, da sie beide im Deutschen ‚seit‘ bedeuten. Allerdings ist ‚for‘ für Zeiträume und ‚since‘ für Zeitpunkte zu verwenden.

Außerdem haben Deutsche oft Schwierigkeiten mit Wörtern, die im Englischen keinen Singular oder keinen Plural haben. ‚information‘ existiert im Englischen nur im Singular; ‚news‘ hingegen nur im Plural.

Syntax scheint für die meisten Deutschen kein Problem zu sein, insofern belaufen sich die Fehler auf einen sehr kleinen, wenn auffälligen Bereich.
