日本語は独特の美しい言語だが、習うのは極端に難しいと嘆いている外国人を見てきました。でも心配しないで！日本人でさえ、勉強するのが大変ですし、新聞などは特に高校を卒業するまで読めないのが現状です。漢字を勉強するプロセスは日本人にとっても長いものなのです。

日本語は外国語を借りることが多いのでも有名です。これらは外来語と呼ばれ、オランダ語、ドイツ語、ポルトガル語からは医学関係の、フランス語、イタリア語からは音楽、食べ物関係の単語を借りています。

英語は一番多く借りており、特にＩＴ関係からです。問題は英語と日本語には全く類似性がないため、借りたときのままの単語は日本人にとって発音できないということです。ＬとＲ、ＢとＷなどはその典型といえましょう。

クリップでみてもらえばわかりますが日本人が日本語発音で英語を話すと、ネイティブにわかってもらえないという悲劇が起こるのです。

日本人はクリエイティブなので、英語でいくつか単語を作り始めました。サラリーマンなどはその一例です。これはビジネスマンのことを指すのですが、もしサラリーマンなどと英語圏で言えば、絶対にわかってもらえないでしょう。これらの単語は和製英語と呼ばれます。この和製英語は日本人が英語をちゃんとしゃべれない大きな障害となっているのも事実です。和製英語は多いのでそれがちゃんとした英語なのかそうでないのかがわからくなってくるからです。

最近は特にグローバリゼーションも手伝って、また外来語がものすごく増えたみたいですね。外来語が多くなりすぎて、日本語が消えてゆく、、、ような事態にだけはなってほしくないですからね。

I heard people say that Japanese is such a beautiful unique language, but extremely difficult to learn due to the three writing systems. Don’t worry! Even Japanese have hard time to learn it. We cannot read newspapers until we graduate from high school because the Kanji (one of the writing systems) learning process usually takes a long time.

Japanese languages are also well known for having loan words. We call these words Gairaigo. We apply the word as it is, then pronounce it in a Japanese way. Many words have been borrowed from Portuguese, Dutch and German, especially in the fields of medicine. Some words came from French and Italian in the fields of music and food.

English has been the most of it, especially in the field of IT. As Japanese language is completely different from English counterpart, there are a lot of alphabets that do not exist in Japan. “L” and “R”, “B” and “W” are some of the typical examples that we cannot pronounce right. That is the reason why English speakers call it Engrish or Japangrish to make fun of it. Yeah, I know.

Since the words are heavily pronounced in Japanese way as you can see, that causes miscommunication or misunderstanding.

As Japanese are so creative (!?), some of the English words have been made up for Japanese use only. For example, we have a word called “salary man”. It means “business man” in English. That is not absolutely understandable if we say the word in English-speaking countries. We call these words Wasei words (English words made in Japan). Unfortunately Wasei words became one of the obstacles for Japanese to speak right English. Because there are many Wasei words, people cannot tell if the words are Wasei words or real English.

In recent years, the numbers of adapting loan languages are tremendously increased because of the influence of globalization. I hope that we do not lose our own beautiful languages!

１． うどん

２． ラーメン
ラーメンは肉汁スープと切り刻まれた野菜、卵、などが入っています。　　ラーメンは日本で一番人気が高い食べ物といえるでしょう。

3. すき焼き
すき焼きは鍋物の一種です。いろんな野菜、豆腐、うどん、ビーフなどが含まれています。私は家族とよく冬にこたつを囲んで、一緒に座って食べて、お酒を飲みながら特に冬の時期に食べたものです。それが最高の食べ方ですよね！

We have a wide variety of other foods that foreigners do not always know. I will introduce some of them here, and hopefully make you a Japanese food lover! The following is a typical Japanese breakfast:

Seaweed, Umeboshi (picked dry sour plum) and Natto (rotten beans) are typically eaten for breakfast as well. Natto is proven to prevent obesity, aging, and some types of cancer. The only problem is whether you can eat Natto or not. I don’t know how many times foreign friends ran away from me whenever I ate it. You don’t understand what I mean? Then see what Natto is like!

The typical Japanese lunch/dinner:

In particular, Japanese like to eat noodle dishes. These are considered fast food because they are relatively inexpensive. Foreigners are always surprised by the way Japanese eat noodles, making a lot of noise. My German husband freaks out whenever he eats these with my dad. Well, get used to it. That’s the traditional way to eat. It shows how delicious the dish is and the more sound you make, the better it is.

1. Udon are thick noodles, made by wheat, salt and water. They are quite easy to cook. Even a Chimpanzee could do it! For more details take a look at the clip below.

2. Ramen is made with a meaty broth, noodles, and shredded vegetables and meats added to it. I would say that this noodle cuisine is the most popular dish for Japanese.

3. Sukiyaki
Sukiyaki is a Japanese pot dish. The main ingredients are beef, many vegetables, Udon and Tofu. I enjoyed eating with my family in winter time, sitting on the floor, talking, drinking Sake, around the Kotatsu. ( special Japanese low table covered by blanket.) That is the best way to eat Sukiyaki!

Be a Japanese food lover!

The reasons why Apple could not sell iPhones in Japan became a controversial topic in America. In fact, I don’t know how many times I heard business people say that breaking into the Japanese market is like a labyrinth. GAP, Footlocker and Facebook were some of the symbolic failures and now the iPhone is facing the same destiny. Why is the iPhone having such a hard time in Japan?

Listed below are some of the key factors:

1. Too bulky: Japanese love small and slim gadgets!
2. Japanese cell-phone technology is about 5 years more advanced, meaning iPhone is nothing special. For example, the iPhone lacks a video camera feature.
3. Monthly rate is too high because the iPhone uses a different communication standard. (Attention: Feb. 2009 iPhone decided to reduce monthly price.)
4. Very hard to type Japanese characters on touch-screen because of their original transformation writing system.
5. Not efficient at all that you need both-hands to use it. According to a survey, Japanese use cell-phones the most in trains so they need to use only one-hand as the trains are so crowded.
6. Japanese love American culture but do not trust American products. They trust only Japanese products or German products.
7. iPhones do not look fashionable especially for Japanese women. They love more kawaii (cute) and feminine goods.

In summary: iPhone is cool, but not practical for Japanese!

But let’s get back to the main topic. Here are the applications that Japanese would like to have in their iPhones.

1. Stop Karoshi (death from overwork) by iPhone sensor!
   Japanese are well known to work until midnight. But it’s time to slow down the pace and enjoy their lives. Bosses would check the degree of tiredness of each employee by iPhone sensor! As soon as the alert goes off, they must let employees take off right away.
2. Stop suicides by iPhone detection!
   Unfortunately, Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. More than 30,000 people commit suicide every year and the number dramatically increased right after the start of the economic crisis. This would detect early warning signs.
3. Finding capsule and love hotels!
   Japan has a variety of hotels with different purposes from capsule hotels to love hotels with different prices, features and services. Love hotels are used mainly by couples looking for some extra privacy, so in a small cramped country like Japan, this type of business will never go away. 4. Checking Japanese real “yes” meaning!
   If a Japanese answers back “yes” to you, it may mean “yes”, but it sometimes means “no”! If you need to know the real truth, iPhone detection would help to easily understand what they want!

6. 日本人はアメリカの文化が大好きですが、アメリカ製品に対しての信用を持っていません。日本人は日本製かドイツ製のものだけ信用している傾向があります。
7. iPhoneは日本人女性にとってファッショナブルではないのです。彼女たちはもっとフェミニンなかわいい携帯がすきなのです。

つまりiPhoneはかっこいいけど、日本人にとっては実用的ではない！ということですね。

But we have beautiful cherry blossom festivals, which occur in spring season. The festivals occur in each religion but the precise date of it depends on the weather. Southern parts of Japan usually start blooming from the middle of March. The festivals gradually move North toward the end of April. During this season news stations forecast cherry blossoms blooming and give the expected date of when the festival would be. That way people can decide when and where to go for festivals. We are taught by cherry blossoms that you should do your best to bloom in the short life you have, and proudly wither when it’s done.

As a result of the economic crisis, people feel that they cannot afford to reflect upon their own lives or even appreciate the beauty of life. Therefore, this year’s cherry blossom festival has assumed a more important role than in the previous years as it allows the Japanese to get a break from harsh reality and to momentarily escape from it.
