A Typical Dutch Breakfast

If you have ever been invited by Dutch people, you know that our taste in food and drinks doesn´t really differ from most other western and northern European countries. Nevertheless, there are several products that you won´t find anywhere outside the Netherlands. Indeed, a Dutch breakfast contains products that you probably won´t encounter in other countries.

Hagelslag

A typical Dutch breakfast contains – besides bread, jam, butter, milk, tea and coffee – some other things that you most likely won´t see anywhere else. The most exotic product is probably ‘hagelslag’. Hagelslag is made of chocolate and you sprinkle it on a slice of bread. Always use butter or the hagelslag will land everywhere except in your mouth when you take a bite. The common version of hagelslag is available in dark, milk or white chocolate. There is also hagelslag made of sugar and in bright colours, which is called ‘vruchtenhagel’ and tastes like fruit.

Vlokken
‘Vlokken’ are a kind of hagelslag. They are made of chocolate as well, but they look different. Vlokken are small thin pieces of chocolate and they are approximately one centimeter wide. Vlokken are available in dark, milk or white chocolate and you sprinkle them on a slice of bread just like hagelslag.

Pindakaas

There are just a few countries in the world where people love peanut butter and the Netherlands is one of them. In the Netherlands, peanut butter is called ‘pindakaas’ (peanut cheese) and is the sandwich spread every child grows up with. It is available in many different versions, for instance with small pieces of peanuts. Most people combine pindakaas with hagelslag on a slice of bread and that just tastes delicious. It is the ultimate combination of peanuts and chocolate.

Ontbijtkoek

Another typical Dutch product eaten for breakfast is ‘ontbijtkoek’. Ontbijtkoek (breakfast cake) is a kind of spicy cake, light brown and spiced with cinnamon, ginger and cloves. It tastes sweet and spicy and you eat it with a thick layer of butter on top. You just buy the cake in the supermarket – ontbijtkoek is also available with raisins, nuts or sugar in it. Nowadays ontbijtkoek is also eaten as a snack: it is low in calories and is therefore seen as a healthy snack.
