Winner of the Golden Bear in the category Best Film at the Berlin Film Festival 2008, the film directed by José Padilha is based on the book “Elite Troop” (“Elite da Tropa“), which includes reports on the daily lives of the Special Police Operations Battalion (BOPE), written by the police officers André Batista and Rodrigo Pimentel, members of this squad, along with the anthropologist Luiz Eduardo Soares.
The film takes place in 1997, when the city of Rio de Janeiro awaits the visit of Pope John Paul II. The chaotic situation in the city is almost of war between trafficking and the police, and the Special Operations Battalion of Military Police (BOPE) will be in charge of ensuring Pope’s security during his visit, a division of the Rio de Janeiro police considered incorruptible, commanded by Captain Nascimento (Wager Moura). On the verge of having his first child, Captain Nascimento is fed up with the pressure of life in the battalion, but before leaving he must choose a replacement.
