Butter cake? This cake, famous in France, but especially in Brittany takes its name from the Breton language “Kouign” – cake and “amann” – butter. The kouign-amann does not care for fruits, chocolate and other superfluous accessories. It is a real, traditional pastry, a tribute to sugar and fat. Yet, the appearing simplicity of the dessert is quite deceiving and requires a lot more skills than wannabe bakers would have.

Recently, a well-known newspaper has published the list of 2010 best-selling books in Italy. Guess who won? Cotto e mangiato (Cooked and Eaten), the recipe book written by Benedetta Parodi which became a bestseller in the very first weeks after the release date (November 2009).
