2. Karneval in Köln (11.

You are in Paris, you just had a nice and cheap meal (re article Travelling cheaply in Paris: some additional tips (1)), and now you would like to see what Paris has to offer on the cultural front.

-	Musée national d'art moderne - Centre Pompidou

Now that you are aware of the main ways of saving money in France, I would like to share some more tips which made my life easier and cheaper when I was living in Paris.

Now that you are aware of the main ways of saving money in France, when using public transport or for cheap accommodation and museums (re. article How to Travel Cheaper in France?), I would like to share some more tips which made my life easier and cheaper when I was living in Paris.

Eating out cheaply
Eating out in Paris is often quite expensive, especially for those who are interested the so-called “French cuisine”. The following service will allow you to save up to 50% of the bill while enjoying a meal in top restaurants in Paris and the rest of France. It is called Lafourchette.com and includes a wide range of restaurants of all kinds (French food of course, but also pizza restaurants, sushi places…).
To find the list of discounts, go to the website, choose a city (you will find the best offers in Paris), then click on the « Promotions » tag at the top of the list of restaurants. Special offers for each restaurant will appear in red. Be careful to read the offer from beginning to end by clicking on the link to avoid a bad surprise! Once you have chosen a place, click on « Réserver », specify the time and date as well as the number of guests, and complete the reservation by giving your contact details. Now you can enjoy your meal!

If you a looking for something more informal and laid-back, free couscous is another idea to eat cheaply in Paris. There are several in Paris, mostly towards the end of the week. To attract more customers, these places (mainly bars) offer a portion of couscous or of mussels and chips to all customers who buy a drink (around 3.5 euros for a pint of beer). The portions are relatively big, staff are welcoming and, very often, you will share a table with complete strangers – an ideal way of meeting people! Just remember to arrive early as these places fill up quite fast. You will find the list of free couscous in Paris by searching « couscous gratuits Paris » in Google.fr.

I would enjoy reading your tips too!

The second part of the article will focus on tips to go the theatre or to the cinema in Paris at a reduced price.

As pessoas têm tamanhos, cabelos, vozes e gostos diferentes.

Alguns indivíduos aprendem melhor ouvindo; outros vendo; outros utilizando movimentos corporais.

People are different: our hair, voices, sizes and tastes vary a lot. We also have different needs and learning styles. In order to learn better and more efficiently, the first step is to know a little more about ourselves. How do we study? What's our learning style? How do we learn best?
Some people learn best by listening; others by seeing; others by movement. When I was doing an exam and did not know the answer to a question I’d closed my eyes and picture the exact book page where the answer was. That wasn’t very helpful because though I knew which page the answer was probably on, I couldn’t read what was on it.

When I'm taking a class I like to look at the teacher. The same happens when I’m watching a foreign movie: I focus not only on the sound of the language but also on the movement of the actors’ lips . This is one of the reasons why I hate watching dubbed movies as the sound and movements don’t often match. My own learning style is visual. I like and need to see what's going on to learn better. My learning strategy is using mind maps, diagrams, arrows and colors. If the teacher tells me that pen in German is “Kugelschreiber” and is a masculine noun (in Portuguese it’s feminine), I just imagine a blue pen with the name "Kugelschreiber" engraved on its surface.

Other people just can’t stand still. They need to move - use their hands, perform tasks and so on, in order to learn. They can’t study sitting in the same position for hours simply because they learn best through movement and practical tasks. There are also those who learn best by listening or explaining to someone else what they have studied. Who hasn’t had classmates who loved to explain what they had studied before an exam? These people usually do well in debates and oral presentations as they learn best creating melodies, reading out loud and talking about what they have studied.

What about you - how do you learn best?

Have you been to Latin America? Are there any tips and tricks you want to share?

In a previous article I pointed out some things you need to know about Latin American culture and life style. This time I'm going to give you eager travellers some tips and tricks that might come in handy when backpacking around Latin America:

•	Be flexible. No matter how far in advance you have booked hostels and planned your trip, there is a high probability that things are not going to go your way, but this is not necessarily a bad thing! Sometimes it might work out even better than expected.

•	Any contact is a good contact. Ask around for friends or friends of friends living in the cities you're visiting, and get in touch with them. There is nothing better than coming to a city where you know a local. Latin Americans tend to be very welcoming and are always willing to help tourists.

•	Talk to the locals. In case you didn't manage to get in touch with friends, don't be afraid to talk to the locals, ask them for advice on what to do, what safety measures to take, etc. No travel guide will be as useful and accurate as the locals.

•	Read about the country in advance. This might give you insight on the culture, and it will definitely result in a more enriching travel experience.

•	Carry small amounts of money with you whenever possible.

•	Do not rely on credit cards. Normally they're accepted only by big businesses and in cities.

•	If you're taking a taxi, agree on the price beforehand. In some countries they don't have taximeters.

•	If you're a girl don't travel alone. I wouldn't recommend it, but if you still want to do it try to stay and travel with Latin American friends.

•	Blend in with the crowd. Very often in Latin America you can spot foreigners from a mile off, and not because they're blonde and milky white. Here is a description of the typical foreign traveller for you so you can avoid looking like him/her. They will be wearing Bermuda shorts and/or tiny skirts, flip flops at all times, fancy shiny sunglasses and have a camera hanging around their neck. They are also always looking up, even if there are no skyscrapers to be seen.

•	Follow the usual safety precautions. Do not walk along dark streets, hide your money in a safe place and never put it all in one place, eg your pocket. Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you, make several copies of your passport and important documents and keep them in different places (as with your money), carry important addresses and phone numbers with you, etc...

•	Do not abuse your stomach. Give your stomach some time to adapt before trying out all of the possible types of street food. I'm sure you don't want to end up in hospital.

•	Sorry, no cheap airlines or trains. There is no such thing as a Transamerican train or a Ryanair of the Americas. The truth is, travelling by plane is expensive and travelling by bus is not really safe, partly due to unsafe boundaries, the rugged landscape and roads that are in poor condition.

•	DO NOT ATTEMPT TO DRIVE. Under no circumstances, even if you are an expert driver...

•	Leave the fancy stuff at home. You don't need to take your laptop, blackberry, iPhone, GPS, gold earrings, etc. If you must take electronics don't show them off.

It's a language learner's dream: being absolutely immersed in their target language in a country where their target language is spoken...

It's a language learner's dream: being absolutely immersed in their target language in a country where their target language is spoken. No matter where they go, who they talk to, what they see and read around them, their world is a classroom and they get to see the language they are learning come to life. Everything from reading advertisements on billboards to listening in on people's conversations on the subway (it doesn't count as eavesdropping if it's for educational purposes!), it's all contributing to their language learning.

As amazing as an opportunity it is to be in the country where the language you are learning is spoken, it unfortunately does not mean that by simply being there you will absorb the language over time. Language learning takes effort. I have heard of people who have lived in a foreign country for an extended period of time and still can not speak the language. However, when with the right combination of activities and effort, you can set your language learning on the fast track and make the most of your time abroad!

Step 1. Preparation
Going to a target language country in order to learn the language without any previous knowledge of the language will waste valuable learning time once you get there. You should at least have an idea for the sound of the language, basic vocabulary, knowledge of how the language is structured and the basic "survival phrases" that you will need in the beginning of your stay, but of course the more the better! On top of the wide selection of beginner courses that you can buy online or from your local bookshop, there are nearly endless resources online for beginner language learners. Prepare as much as you can so that you can be prepared when you arrive and make the time in the country really count by being able to get out there and communicate with the locals!

Step 2. Structure (on the side!)
If you are specifically travelling in order to improve your language skills, then you must continue to actually study the language in a formal setting. But I must emphasize: this must be done ON THE SIDE. When I lived in Spain last year I spent way too much time cooped up in my apartment with my nose inside of Spanish books while the whole world outside my apartment was just dying to teach me Spanish. Do not let this happen! There are ways to balance formal studying with immersion.

I for one really enjoy in-country language classes. You get to have a regularly scheduled study time with people from around the world with similar goals as yourself, you have a native teacher and you have structured study time everyday so you can spend the rest of your time (other than maybe an hour or so everyday reviewing what you learned in class, which is important) doing the immersion stuff! If you do not want to spend money on a class, then you should at least allow an hour or so a day to work on your own with an autodidactic course.

Step 3. Language exchange partners
Find yourself one or two (or more!) language exchange partners and meet up with them regularly! This is a GREAT way to get out there and start meeting people, especially if you don't know where to start. Language exchange partners are people you meet up with to learn each other's native languages. You meet in a café or somewhere similar, and spend some time speaking in your native language and in their native language. It is a mutually beneficial experience for both participants, and it's a great way to meet friends.

Step 4. Libraries are your friend!
If you will be staying in the country for an extended period of time, get a library card and make good use of it! Read as much as you possibly can (even if it is just children's books!) use the study rooms, videos, magazines, etc. for free! Input is an extremely important part of language learning,

Step 5. Listen!
TV, Radio, conversations in public. Your target language is surrounding you so LISTEN as much as you can!

Step 6. Talk!
As well as finding some conversation buddies, it is also very important to get out there and TALK! Don't be afraid of making mistakes! Ask for directions, for the time, etc. (even if you already know the answer!) Every little bit helps. The ideal thing to do is to make a pledge not to speak your native language while abroad. Even if you can only speak a very broken version of your target language, it doesn't matter! The more you force yourself to do it (and it WILL be exhausting at first) try to stick with it, it will pay off big time!

Step 7. Enjoy yourself!
You will be having a great opportunity to learn your target language, but don't stress yourself! Remember to relax and enjoy your experience. Learning a language is just as much about learning a culture, so go and enjoy the culture that your target language country has to offer.

Happy Language Learning!
