Following the previous post, “the most recognized word in the world?”, I will examine the most recognized brand name in the world. “Coke/Coca cola” is one of the two most recognized words in the world, and therefore, it is naturally considered as the most recognized brand name in the world. But is it really so?

どちらがよりよく知られているのかは不明ですが、「ＯＫ」または「Ｃｏｋｅ」（「Ｃｏｃａ　Ｃｏｌａ」）が言語を問わず全世界の人口の間で最もよく知られている言葉だそうです。ただこれは一般的な認識であって、これを決定づけるほどの学術的・科学的な検証はされていない模様。ここで思うのは、本当にこの二つのどちらかが世界で最もよく知られた、理解される言葉であるのかということです。例えば、「アメリカ」や「ヨーロッパ」、「アジア」等はどうでしょうか？「Ｃｏｋｅ」という言葉が「Ａｍｅｒｉｃａ」より認知度が高いというのは驚きかもしれません。 その他にも「Ｃｏｋｅ」と肩を並べるような世界的ブランドが思いつくかもしれません。「マクドナルド」、「マイクロソフト」、「ソニー」、「ベンツ」（「Ｍｅｒｃｅｄｅｓ　Ｂｅｎｚ」）などでしょうか。ただこうして並べてみると「コカ・コーラ」程のブランド力は無いのかもといった感じ。そして残念ながら「ペプシ」は「コカ・コーラ」の認知度には到底及ばないでしょう。近年になってより頻繁に使われるようになった言葉もあります。「インターネット」、「Ｅメール」や「Ｗｉｎｄｏｗｓ」等でしょうか。ところで「Ｍｉｃｒｏｓｏｆｔ」と「Ｗｉｎｄｏｗｓ」では世界的にどちらがより認知される言葉なのでしょうか？Ｗｉｎｄｏｗｓを使っている人がそれをＭｉｃｒｏｓｏｆｔの製品であるのを知らずに、「Ｍｉｃｒｏｓｏｆｔ」という言葉は聞いたことがない、という事もあるかもしれません。世界的なスポーツチームの名前、「バルセロナ」や「マンチェスター」もよく知られていると思います。ただ、これはある特定の年齢層等に限定されるので全世界の人口となると対象外となるでしょう。（「マンチェスター」がサッカークラブの名前だという事は知っていてもそれが英国の都市であるということを知らないという子供もいます。これはやはり世界的なブランドのマーケティングの力だと思います。） とはいえこれらの言葉が全世界で「ＯＫ」よりもよく認知されるということはまず無いでしょう。それでは「Ｅｎｇｌｉｓｈ」はどうでしょう？　「ＯＫ」という言葉を認知する人がそれを英語で使われる言葉だと知らずに「Ｅｎｇｌｉｓｈ」という言葉は何だか検討がつかないということはあるでしょうか？それと逆に「Ｅｎｇｌｉｓｈ」という言葉を認知出来る人が「ＯＫ」という言葉を知らないということが有り得るでしょうか？そして「ＯＫ」と「Ｃｏｋｅ」ではどちらがより認識されているのでしょうか？個人的には「ＯＫ」だと思いますが、それを確認することは難しいでしょう。やはり実質的に世界語となっている英語の言葉が世界でもっとも知られている言葉であろう、というのが一般的な認識のようです。しかしながら、もしかすると母語話者数の多い中国語の言葉だったり、という事もありえるかもしれません。 [English]

After a quick search using the bab.la Swedish-English-Swedish database (thank you Patrick) it was concluded that 1558 words, terms, or acronyms are identical cognates (in spelling, but not necessary in meaning) in both the Swedish and English languages.

Not only what we say, but also how we say it, makes the difference. Especially when it comes to our feelings! The research for the best terms is not only an exercise for linguists, or a sophisticated little quirk, but a real need which could help us to improve our lives.
