Brazilian bikini wax: 10 facts we never wanted to know

1 – What is Brazilian bikini wax?

Brazilian bikini wax is the hair removal of the female genital area using warm wax. The hair is removed from the crotch area and the inner lips, generally leaving a small stripe at the top.

2 – How do Brazilians call it?

The most common names are virilha completa (total crotch area) ou depilação íntima total (total hair removal of the intimate area).

3 – Why is it called Brazilian?

Yes, we all know Brazilian women wear small bikinis for European or North American standards, that´s not the reason. For that you can blame it on (or thank) the J Sisters, a group of Brazilians from Vitória who opened a salon in Manhattan, New York, and started offering the service in the 90s.

4 – How popular is it?

Last March Cosmopolitan magazine did a poll with their readers which resulted in 71% of them having the Brazilian as their favourite.

5 – Why is it so popular?

As in many other aspects of contemporary culture, the internet played a significant role in spreading the popularity of the waxing of the genital area. The technology made pornography easily accessible. And naked genitals make for a better viewing of “the action” for pornography watchers. In families or countries where sexual education fails, teenagers turn to porn for “information” on sex, which creates the idea that the ideal female organ should be hairless.

6 – Does it have to hurt (so much)?

Bikini waxing is not the most pleasant of activities. But it doesn’t have to hurt so much. Trimming your hair with scissors beforehand and exfoliating the area a few days before going to the salon makes it a less stressful experience. And trust me, after the third time it gets less and less painful.

7- The aim problem

After the first time you have had a Brazilian bikini wax, you will notice a lack of accuracy in your peeing skills. Just FYI.

8- W-A-X for a better S-E-X?

While there is a large amount of women who believe that the waxing of the inner lips results in an increase sensation during intercourse, others find it disturbing to see their private parts looking like the one of a 9 year old. Or a Barbie doll.

9 – Pubic hair = uncleanness?

In three words: not at all! Pubic hair actually provides a barrier against bacteria. The warm environment and the irritated skin becomes a very good place for their development.

10 – To Brazilian or not to Brazilian: that´s the question

Beauty companies and magazines will do everything to convince you that you must, feminists will shout that you mustn’t. You know what? I´ll say you should do whatever feels good for you.

Lady Gaga, Gwyneth Paltrow and Brazil´s Nanda Costa are all actresses that rather keep it natural. Cameron Diaz even wrote about it on her book:

“It’s a personal decision, but I’m just putting it out there: Consider leaving your vagina fully dressed, ladies Twenty years from now, you will still want to be presenting it to someone special, and it would be nice to let him or her unwrap it like the gift that it is.”

And that is for sure something I never wanted to know.
