Sweden may be one of the smallest countries in Europe when it comes to people but it does not prevent the Swedes from appearing on the world map when it comes to strong and well-known brands. After decades of IKEA and ABBA being the face outwards for Sweden, finally new brands have started to emerge.
Some people claim that the success in the business world is due to the cold climate – the Swedes have not much else to do than to sit at home and think of new business ideas. However whether Swedes have the long and cold winter to thank for their well-known brands is only a theory, but the fact remains that Sweden is the producer of many world famous brands. Did you know that these four brands are from Sweden?
- Spotify
What is not commonly known is that after the Silicon Valley, Stockholm is the largest tech hub in the world on a per capita basis. The music service Spotify was founded in Sweden in 2006 and is now used worldwide.
- Skype
Most people are familiar with Skype – it is the service that allows free video calls worldwide. Skype is also one of the brands that have become so commonly used that it has been made into a verb: to “skype”.
- H&M
This incredibly popular clothing chain is known by most people in the world, and the company was founded in 1947 in Västerås, Sweden. Nowadays, there are shops represented throughout the world. The H&M Group also includes the brands COS, Monki, Weekday, & Other Stories and H&M Home, and these are also internationally represented.
- Volvo
In Latin, volvo translates to “I roll” and this car company was founded in Gothenburg, Sweden. Although the production is now in China, Volvo is still a company that Swedes, and especially people from Gothenburg, are incredibly proud of. Volvo also often makes use of Swedish celebrities in their advertising campaigns. Have you ever heard of footballer Zlatan Ibrahimovic or music talent Avicii? These are just two of the famous Swedes who participated in Volvo’s advertising campaigns.
