Dutch pop music – Part 1

If you have been invited to a typical Dutch student party, don´t be surprised if the DJ loves to play Dutch music. Especially students like to sing Dutch songs aloud, after having drunk a few beers… In order to join them: Here are some classics of Dutch pop music that you just need to know. Some of the songs have the lyrics included, so you can practice your Dutch singing skills :-).

Dromen zijn bedrog
The song ´Dromen zijn bedrog´ (Dreams are deceit) by Dutch-Italian singer Marco Borsato was a major hit in the mid 90’s. In 1994 the song was in the charts for several weeks and for the singer it was the start of a great career.

Het is een nacht
Another major hit in the mid 90ties is ´Het is een nacht´ (It is a night) performed by Dutch performer Guus Meeuwis and his band Vagant. The most famous version of the song was recorded at a live concert, so you can hear the audience as well.

Stil in mij
The Dutch band Van Dik Hout (literally: From Thick Wood) scored their first and biggest hit also in the mid 90’s with the song ´Stil in mij´ (Quiet in me). The video below was recorded at a wedding concert for the Dutch Crown Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Maxima in 2002 (that´s why you see so many royals).
