What do these two festivals have in common? One has a Spanish origin and the other is from Germany. Both are characterized by events that have become famous all over the world. It was estimated that 6 million tourists went to Oktoberfest last year, and about one million people attended the Feria de Abril in Seville.
Oktoberfest was a celebration initially created because of the wedding of Ludwig I of Bavaria to his wife Therese Saxe-Altenburg. However, the celebration was repeated the following year, and it continues annually even now, becoming a tradition for Germany. The first celebration held a horse race during Oktoberfest in the Theresienwiese (Therese´s Field ) next to Munich.
April Fair is from Seville, the most important city in southern Spain. It used to be a cattle market in the late nineteenth century, specifically in 1847. La Feria de Sevilla is always held in the third week after Easter, Tuesday to Sunday. During the day, between 12:00PM and 8:00PM there are performances on the streets with horses. Riders and other performers are dressed in the typical dress or flamenco.
Beer, food and dancing.
Both events have marked differences; for example in the April Fair there are bullfights, horseback riding and Sevillanas are danced, while during the German festival, apart from the sideshows and tents, the main action is to sit at tables and drink. However, it could be said that in both the main purpose is to sing, dance, eat and laugh.
Dirndl or flamenco dress?
To sum everything up here there are two typical dresses for these two events. Which would you choose? Personally, I find the flamenco dress more sensual. The Dirndl is a nice dress too and it actually looks more comfortable to wear. Just my thoughts.
