It’s Friday! Bring the popcorn and put some extra butter because today’s movie is an amazing Brazilian comedy!

Lisbela e o Prisioneiro (Lisbela and the Prisoner), 2003

Lisbela is engaged when Leléu comes to town. They fall in love with each other and start to live a story full of characters taken from the Brazilian northeastern scenery: Inaura, a seductive married woman who tries to attract the hero; Frederico, Inaura’s husband and a professional killer; Lt. Guedes, Lisbela’s harsh father and the chief of the police; Douglas, Lisbela’s fiancé who has a very strong southern accent after spending only a month of his life in Rio de Janeiro; and Citonho, a clumsy soldier who spends the whole movie trying to finish his honeymoon with his new wife.

Lisbela and Leléu suffer a lot of pressure from family, their social differences and with their own doubts. But, in a final turn, full of braveness and humor, they try to follow their destiny. As Lisbela herself says in the movie, the fun is not to know what happens. It is to know how and when it happens.

The movie is a comedy eloquently shaped to the habits of a region of Brazil which is not very known by tourists, apart from being shot in real cities through the wildest areas. If you want to laugh and have a good time, Lisbela e o Prisioneiro is definitely the movie to watch.
