New Year, new life. But first – new resolutions! Before eating grapes and jumping seven waves (Brazilian New Year’s Eve traditions), how about thinking of the coming year and keep it simple when setting out you list of resolutions? After all, there is nothing better than keeping them realistic and simple in order to carry them out. Think positively about the year ahead and what you can achieve. Here are some tips:
Be more active. There’s no need to go to the gym and work out seven days a week. Radical decisions are the first ones to be ditched. How about leaving the car at home once in a while? Take a walk to the bakery or the newsstand – that would be a good start. You’ll not only exercise a bit but also get to know your neighborhood better. Even a light walk is beneficial to your mental health.
Learn something new. Have you ever wanted to learn French, cook or sew? Enroll yourself at a course that would challenge your motor skills or that takes you out of your comfort zone. It’s a good way to learn from your own limitations and not boring at all. It stimulates self-confidence, keeps your enthusiasm to learn alive and gives you the chance to have lots of laughter.
Do some volunteer work. You can start with small actions that will make a difference to you and your surroundings. Helping others brings satisfaction both for those who help as to the ones who receive it. You can search for information about institutions that need help online or in your town hall. Orphanages, hospitals, nursing homes, daycare centers, schools – there’s a lot of choice for you out there!
Spend some time with the ones you love. It feels great to be around people you love – your mother, father, friends, girlfriend, husband, children… As much as you have a tiring daily routine, it’s always possible to take some time out during the week to enjoy being with your loved ones. There are lots of free fun things to do – play cards, mime, dance…
Travel. Escaping from routine is great, isn’t it? Travel whenever you have the opportunity to do so, even if it’s only for a day or two. It’s a perfect way to have fun and refresh your mind. For those who are not able or willing to spend much, low season months and cheap routes are good options.
Breath. Simple, isn’t it? Well, though we are breathing all the time we don’t really pay attention to how we do it. Stopping and taking a deep breath once in a while oxygenates the brain and reduces stress. When everyday trifles start to irritate you, stop and breathe deeply. And laugh at them, after all, they are just not worth it.
Keep it simple. Why complicate things? In the end, if you take a good look at them, those little things that bother you and make our days “heavy” might be simply solved. Keep it simple and try not to stress yourself out.
Leave some room for surprises and always remember that kindness generates kindness.
