1) BAIKAL LAKE
The largest and deepest lake in the world – Baikal – attracts thousands of tourists from all around the world each year. Surrounded by high mountain ranges on all sides, Baikal is stretched out on 636 km of length and 80 km of width, amounting to 20% of the world’s reserves of sweet water. Baikal water is so clear and transparent that in earlier times it was considered as curative and people used to drink it to be healed of diseases. Baikal is especially beautiful in the winter, with a completely smooth ice it turns into a huge skating rink, which can be used for figure skating.
2) KIZHI ISLAND
One of the main attractions of the Republic of Karelia (my homeland) – not so widely known, but incredibly beautiful Kizhi Island, located on the second largest lake in Europe – Onega lake. Kizhi Island is an open air museum that carries you into the far past of Russia. Wooden churches built without a single nail, make Kizhi Island a World Cultural and Natural Heritage.
3) MARBLE CANYON RUSKEALA
If you already stopped in beautiful Karelian area, do not leave without visiting the Marble Canyon Ruskeala, located near the town Sortavala. In earlier times the marble was mined in that area, then operations stopped after some time, and as a result three basins were formed there and filled with clear blue-green water. Marble Canyon is beautiful at any time of the year and is always ready to accept visitors.
4) THE VALLEY OF GEYSERS
Let’s move to a completely different and distant part of Russia – peninsula Kamchatka – also has a wonderful nature worth to come over and visit the place. Valley of Geysers is one of the largest concentrations of geysers in the world and the only one in Eurasia. Unique area is situated at an altitude of more than 500m and represents numerous geysers – spirts of boiling water escaping from the Earth’s hot inside to the surface. A little bit scary, but definitely worth watching this unique nature phenomenon.
5) ALTAI MOUNTAINS
At the border of Central Asia and Siberia the majestic Altai Mountains are situated, their uniqueness is difficult to describe without having been there and seeing them with your own eyes. Nature of Altai is diverse, combining contrasting combinations of different landscapes in a relatively small area. Teletskoe Mountain Lake is a true diamond of Altai because of its crystal clean water and a variety of wildlife. Come visit Altai Mountains and you will enjoy beautiful views, clean air and mountain silence to be with yourself.
