Sweden belongs to one of the nations that still have their royal family, and this one does not fail to generate headlines and scandals: Prince Carl Philip just got married to a reality TV star, the youngest princess Madeleine escaped to New York after a tough break-up and the crown princess Victoria married her personal trainer in 2010. But let us start from the beginning:
The current King – Carl XVI Gustaf ascended to the throne in 1973 and married Silvia Sommerlath in 1976. They met at the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich and have three children together: Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl Philip and Princess Madeleine. Fun fact is that the night before their wedding, the group ABBA performed the song “Dancing Queen” for the first time for the queen. The ruling couple has been living a reasonably quiet life – until 2010 when a book about the King’s private life was released and it became evident that the Swedish monarch might not be the calm and loving family man that everyone thought he was. Instead the book presents evidence of him having year-long love affairs and partying with Serbian gangsters and naked models in sketchy underground clubs.
The Crown Princess Victoria manages to stay clear of scandals and bad press for most of the time. However when she married Prince Daniel – a personal trainer in 2010 the Swedish people had very different views on the marriage of a royal to a “common” person. But Victoria and Daniel went ahead and got married and since then they have daughter Estelle, born 2012 and another child on the way. Victoria is the crown princess which means she will take over the throne from her father, and this also means that little Estelle also will be queen one day.
The middle child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia is Prince Carl Philip. He married Sofia Hellqvist in June 2015, something that was considered quite controversial since she is a former reality TV star and glamour model. Carl Philip himself is a race car driver and competes in championships from time to time. The couple just announced that they are expecting their first child in April 2016.
Princess Madeleine is the youngest child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia. In 2010 she went through a nasty break-up with her fiancée at the time, and moved straight after to New York. There she met her financier husband Christopher O’Neill and the couple got married in 2013, had their first child Leonore in 2014 and second child Nicolas earlier this year. Christopher O’Neill was offered a royal title but passed since he would have to become a Swedish citizen and he already holds a dual American-British citizenship. Princess Madeleine had been living with her family in New York until earlier this year, when they moved back to Stockholm.
