Even though many people don’t believe it, there are people who do visit Colombia. Despite the fact that it is the list of the most violent countries and that it is the first most violent Latin America, many foreigners live in Colombia and many other visit it. Why do they go? Are they not afraid?
Some are exchange students that want to experience Latin-America and after emailing many universities in different countries, they got a fast and kind reply from Colombia. Others go because they have heard wonderful stories about Cartagena and Santa Marta and want to spend vacations there. There are also people traveling from Argentina to México or vice versa. Some others know Colombians abroad that have recommend their country as a beautiful place to travel. Honestly, the reasons are countless.
When you ask a foreigner in Colombia if he or she is afraid of being there, you might get “no” for an answer thus he or she already knows how things work there and which areas are suitable to visit. Foreigners don’t travel to the jungle, unless they have special intentions – generally of an illegal nature.
Salsa bars in Medellín, Cali or Bogotá are common places to find people from abroad, especially from France. Why do French people like salsa so much? I have no clue, but what I do know is that they are so mad about this music that they enjoy dancing to it for hours and hours. On the other hand, some Germans and British prefer to hang out to the sounds of electronic music. For sure that doesn’t mean that any German doesn’t go dancing salsa nor French to a club. Those ones are just some examples. In the main cities it is very common to see foreigners from different countries such as China or Japan on the street. Some of them are single men, who would be pleased to meet people, women in particular We should also take into account that business trips are also quite common.
If you are planning to travel to Latin America, don’t hesitate to include Colombia in your trip. You won’t regret it.
