Why do yoga?

Yoga is a practice that is thousands of years old. Having its roots in India, originally its purpose was to prepare a person for meditation. This was done by a series of postures and movements that were aimed to stretch and strengthen the body, combined with breathing exercises. And essentially, that is the core of yoga even today. However, nowadays it is no longer reserved for meditating Hindus: in fact, there are not many corners of the world where you cannot find someone doing yoga. In the following, I’d like to name some reasons why I think it’s worth it to do yoga.

• Many people associate yoga solely with meditation, but it is actually something different. Yoga is a practice which combines the body and the mind. Doing yoga, as you concentrate on your movements and breathing, you ideally achieve a more harmonious state – physically and mentally.

• Yoga is beneficial to your health if you make it a regular practice. It can reduce stress, help you sleep better and improve your overall well-being. Yoga is also great for anyone who spends their days in front of the computer: if your body tends to become stiff, yoga can help you regain flexibility and movement.

• There are different kinds of yoga, so you are guaranteed to find a variant that suits your needs: for example, there is ashtanga yoga, a more dynamic variation, where yoga postures follow each other in rapid succession; hatha yoga, a gentler form of yoga, and bikram yoga, which is done in a heated room and is supposed to be especially good for getting your blood circulation going!

• Yoga is an accessible form of doing exercise. No equipment is needed apart from a yoga mat, and it is possible to do it almost anywhere and anytime. Once you become used to doing yoga, and are able to remember the postures, you can do it by yourself without needing to go to a class.

If your life sometimes gets too busy or too stressful, it is good to stop for a moment and concentrate on the very basic things. This is where yoga comes in. Give it a try and you might find yourself going back!
