It is hard to accept the fact that my stay in Germany for a semester abroad is coming to an end, which means that my internship in bab.la is ending very soon as well.
During my first days in Germany, I completely froze out every time I had to speak German. Even though I have been learning the language since three years ago, I never thought that it would be that terrifying to practice and speak it to a local – I was too afraid that I will say the wrong words, with wrong grammar and pronunciation.
Here at Lexiophiles, we publish all our articles in two languages; in English, and in our mother tongue. Most of us writers do the English version first, and then translate it into our first language. To assign your native language the role of target language is of course standard procedure for translators, but what’s interesting is that we seem to feel more comfortable composing in English. In fact, after four years of living abroad, I am now both excited and quite nervous to be returning to my mother tongue.
As studying demands more and more time and is getting more and more expensive, it is difficult to enjoy the Dolce Vita of college without working at the same time. Rent, parties and academic resources of all kinds, the total can quickly be of significant amount!
